Olympic Games at Canyon Lakes

Our communities all around The United States are staying fit! Last week, our residents at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick, WA hosted a day long Olympic games.

Throughout the day, we played a variety of games from croquet to shuffleboard. Not only did we play traditional games, but also a few rounds of Wii Bowling.

The games concluded with a screening of ‘Age of Champions’, a tale of inspiration and Olympic dreams. Before the screening, our residents told stories about their own Olympic hopes. Two of our residents, Roy & Corrine spoke to the group about their very own Olympic past. Roy and Corrie participated in The National Senior Olympics several years ago and they shared their experiences.

We have a blast staying fit with our communities. The gang at Canyon Lakes had a fun-filled day of fitness and good times!

Here are a few photos from the day:

Pat and Ruth Celebrate 72 Years

Two of our residents from Merrill Gardens at The University are celebrating a very special anniversary,  Pat and Ruth O’Neill have been married 72 year!

The couple met on a blind date after attending a wedding together. At the wedding Pat and Ruth were both paired up with different dates. Pat was originally set up with Ruth’s sister. A few days after the wedding, Pat called Ruth’s sister when she wasn’t home and asked for Ruth. They hit it off right away.

The couple dated six years before getting married in a small ceremony.

Ruth’s advice on marriage?  “You have to be patient and be able to laugh especially at yourself.  If I knew what the secret was I would bottle it and make a million dollars!”

Ruth and Pat have been living at The University community for one year.  They lived in this neighborhood for 50 years so they were excited to live in a familiar neighborhood with several familiar faces.  While The University was being built, the couple lived at our Northgate Seattle community.

Happy 72nd Anniversary Pat and Ruth. We wish you the best!

Merrill Gardens Goes Hollywood!

Throughout the years, Merrill Gardens has hosted a number of fun events for our residents. This Friday, August 17th, we have something special planned!

Our residents from 20 of our Puget Sound area communities will travel to the Uptown Theatre in Queen Anne to hit the red carpet for an exclusive showing of the hit film “Old Goats”.

What is Old Goats About?

“From local writer-director Taylor Guterson, Old Goats is the often hilarious and always heartfelt story of three older men (local actors Bob Burkholder, David VanderWal, and Britton Crosley, each playing themselves) who refuse to go quietly into the night of retirement and old age.”

The movie stars local actors and was filmed in the Puget Sound area.

Seats to the theatrical premiere screening are available exclusively to residents and guests of Merrill Gardens. During the event, our residents will get the chance to :

  • Walk the paparazzi-lined red carpet upon arrival
  • Meet the film’s director and cast member
  • Enjoy a pre-screening champagne toast
  • Enjoy popcorn during the film and a milkshake from Dick’s Drive-In afterwards.

We are very excited to share this world theatrical premiere with our residents!  Stay tuned for pictures on our Facebook page.

The Merrill Gardens Senior Olympics

Watch out Michel Phelps — Our residents are staying fit and active this summer! In all of our communities we encourage an active lifestyle. From fitness classes to sports, we love to stay active while having fun in a variety of ways.

Merrill Gardens

The gang at Merrill Gardens at Stanwood hosted their Age of Champions where they gave a volleyball to each resident who pledged to keep active. This led up to the Olympics and they were a blast for residents and team member! A variety of games were played including some old time favorites like Ring Toss, Golf, and Egg Walk. We also hosted a few new games like “Pantyhose Swing” and “Oreo Tower”.

What is Pantyhose Swing? This game consisted of hitting a ball across the room to your partner, then tying the pantyhose around your waist and hitting the ball back across the room. *Phew!*

Oreo Tower? In this fun game, residents built a tower of Oreos on top of their partners heads without the Oreos falling. The quickest was a tower of 6 Oreos. Wow!

Residents signed up with a partner and had 6 different games to play during the day. Keeping with tradition, we had Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in all categories.

The day was filled with laughter, fun, and fitness.  Our residents inspire us in so many ways — we can’t wait until next year! To stay updated on future Merrill Garden’s activities, visit us on our Facebook page.
