Talents at Merrill Gardens Manteca – Art Show

In our Manteca community (California), we have some of the best artists around. From oil to tole paintings, we have a number of residents who enjoy creating beautiful works of art.

Dick

Dick, our Resident Council President is an inventor & creator. Dick is legally blind but that does not stop him. He created the piece above out of the paper that the dinner napkins are rolled up in.  If you look to the background you can also see he made Merrill Gardens! Dick has been a resident for almost two years and got the inspiration last Christmas while looking at a Christmas chain.

Dick also created a cross with the same napkin rings that he gave to a friend. He got a lot of residents involved in saving all the napkin rings for him but recently said he is going out of business because the cafeteria switched to fabric napkins!

Malma

Malma has been a resident of Merrill Gardens for two years, but has been an artist all her life. Malma started painting in 1967 and the photos above show her oil and canvas paintings.

For Malma, time varies per painting. Sometimes it could even take years to complete a piece. She told us that she’s usually working on more than one painting at the same time. Malma loves to paint and has been fortunate enough to been able to take art lessons from professional artists.

Malma didn’t have a career in the art works, but is looking to get into a gallery to show and sell her work.

Joan

Joan has been a resident at Manteca for three yeas and has been making art for 10 years prior to moving into Merrill Gardens. The medium Joan paints with is called Tole Painting. With Tole Painting you can paint on wood, candles, flowerpots and canvas.

Joan’s time frame for creating a pieces takes about two to three months depending on the size of piece. Joan had no professional training in art but has always had a strong passion for arts and crafts.

Do you paint? What kinds of hobbies do you enjoy?

Support Our Troops Week Smashes Record!

Our annual Support Our Troops week was a great success. Our 56 communities nationwide helped us raise an enormous amount of money for the USO.

We want to congratulate our community teams for coming together to support the USO. This year was our biggest year yet with a total contribution of $66,000! The past two years we raised $50,000, bringing our grand total for all three years to $166,000. This is a significant contribution and the folks at the USO are deeply grateful.

While all communities did a great job raising money, we want to recognize a few who went above and beyond.

The top money raiser was Green Valley Ranch, bringing in a whopping $6,484!

Kirkland was not far behind with $6,115, followed by Admiral Heights with $4,008, University with $3,129, Canyon Lakes with $2,605 and Fremont with $2,520.

Congratulations to these communities for their wildly successful events. We are so proud of all of our communities, staff, and friends. Thank you everyone who donated to the USO this year.

We can’t wait until next year!

Merrill Gardens + USO = Great Partnership

Merrill Gardens hosted our annual USO Fundraiser during Support Our Troops week and we broke our own record for most funds raised! Each of our 56 communities held a fun event and invited friends, family and local businesses to join them for a great meal.  Everything was donated by Merrill Gardens and those who attended were asked to make a $10 donation. We are so proud to announce that we raised $66,000!

This is such an impressive accomplishment and we are so proud of our residents and team members for their great work.  In the past two years, Merrill Gardens has donated over $100,000 to the USO and with this years efforts our three year donation is now at $166,000.

A big thank you to everyone who helped us to honor our veterans and support the great efforts of the USO.  Here are a few of the ways our communities participated :

USO Casino Night Fundraiser Event – Merrill Gardens at Lancaster (CA)

Our community at Lancaster celebrated with a fun night of bingo, roulette, and black jack.

Our USO Dance – Merrill Gardens at Roswell (GA)

At our community at Roswell, we hosted an afternoon of dancing and great food to benefit the USO. We had a great time and even had a commemorative cake.

USO Display   – Village Green (Gilroy, CA)

The fundraiser featured the stories and pictures of our Veterans as told by local Christopher High School students. The display also had a film that showed additional photos of our Veterans and their times in service as well as the wonderful students that interviewed them. Read More About This Event Here.

Dancing For The USO – Merrill Gardens at Mill Creek (WA)

The room was decorated in red, white and blue and we had great time dancing and enjoying the company of our veterans.

We are so proud of all of our communities that participated. Congratulations everyone who participated and generously donated to the USO. We can’t wait until next year!

Flight ,The Llama Visits Cordata

The holidays have officially started! And what better way to bring in the holiday cheer than with a festive llama?

Last week, Merrill Gardens at Cordata (Bellingham, WA) had a visit from Flight, a certified therapy llama. Flight came in holiday attire and they set up a holiday background for photos. Our residents will send their pictures to friends and families in their holiday cards this year. And yes, the llama gives kisses!

We had a great time with Flight! Check out the photos from the day:
