The folks from Willow Glen and Gilroy called an audible one afternoon and headed out to Santa Clara, where they received a little tour of the new stadium. We think which part they liked the best 🙂

A Little Safari Through California

The folks at Merrill Gardens at Campbell, CA decided it was high time for an adventure. So they headed down to the Pacific Coast about halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterrey, to a little piece of nature called the Elkhorn Slough.

Elkorn Slough Map

Elkhorn Slough is one of California’s largest wetlands and part of a National Estuarine Reserve. It’s inhabited by a sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals, hundreds of species of nesting birds, a large variety of endangered animals and even some feeding sharks.

Our brave explorers enjoyed their mini-safari on a 27 foot pontoon boat, where they spotted wildlife aplenty.

Our residents kept a close eye out for those feeding sharks, but luckily all of the animals they ran across were peaceful.

Kirkland Takes Ice Bucket Challenge to a Whole New Level

You’ve probably seen a lot of ALS Ice Bucket challenges in the last few weeks. But have you seen many that involve Oscar-worth acting, stunts, props and an international challenge at the end?

Well, we’d like to present Stuart “Steven Spielberg” Ostfeldt and his team from Merrill Gardens Kirkland. Not satisfied with simply dumping a bucket of ice water, Stuart brings us one of the top videos we’ve seen so far. Nice work everyone. That’s a wrap.

A Personal Story About What the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is Really About

For the last few weeks, we’ve watched people develop dramatic or funny videos to support the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. We’ve seen kids, adults, celebrities, family members and more take an ice bath to support ALS research.

Our Gilroy, CA community has not only taken the challenge, but also delivers a special message from a resident whose son is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease. If you are only somewhat aware of the pain ALS causes patients and family members, this is a video you need to see. Remember, this Facebook phenomenon is not simply about humor – it’s about raising money to find a cure for this devastating affliction.

Thank you for sharing your touching story.

The Buckets Continue! Watch the Next Merrill Gardens Communities Take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the country by ice storm, with the latest estimate that $15.6 MILLION has been raised to fight ALS.

The Merrill Gardens corporate office took up the challenge last week, when President Tana Gall convinced her team to take the plunge. Within 24 hours, Merrill Gardens Tacoma stepped up and enjoyed their very own ice bath.

This week, the challenge lives on at Merrill Gardens, with Creekside, Northgate Plaza and University all participating in the frosty fundraiser!

Merrill Gardens Tacoma Accepts the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

Well THAT didn’t take long.

Yesterday, we watched Merrill Gardens President Tana Gall and her team get doused with buckets of ice water, as part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Tana then passed along the challenge to Merrill Gardens Tacoma, University and Renton.

Well, less than 24 hours later, Krista Solomon and her team from Merrill Gardens Tacoma stared that challenge straight in the eye.

You’re up Creekside!

Merrill Gardens Residents Fill July With Fun and Frivolity

It was an enjoyable, exciting and patriotic month across our Merrill Gardens communities. Here are some of the July events that residents raved about the most.

Happy Birthday America
July started off with a bang, as communities across the country celebrated Independence Day. Residents at First Hill in Seattle, WA celebrated with Elvis and enjoyed great food.

The folks in Gilroy, CA were also having a grand old time, enjoying BBQ and sunshine out on the deck.

Billiards and Beer in Henderson
July in the Nevada desert means temperatures in the 100?s. That’s why our residents in Henderson brought in some food and drink and enjoyed a Saturday inside playing pool. It may be hot there now, but we’ll all be jealous when winter rolls around and they’re still in shorts.

Proud to be an American
The Creekside community near Seattle extended their Fourth of July patriotism deep into the month, hosting a Passport to Americana theme party. Residents dressed in their favorite “Classic American” ware and enjoyed the treats our country is famous for.

The Oceanside Art Exhibit
Meanwhile, down in Oceanside, CA residents created and displayed their creative side, with a full-scale art show. Beautiful work by some very talented folks.

Getting Into the Swing of Summer

We often talk about how much fun the residents of Merrill Gardens are. But we can’t forget about the other people who spend time in the communities, making sure everyone has a smile on their face.

We love that the teams that support each Merrill Gardens community are as active, fun, lively and entertaining as the people who live there. If you don’t believe us, check out this spontaneous softball game that arose between the staffs at the Merrill Gardens in Village Green and Willow Glen.

We just had to throw some music between the highlights. If you are going to choreograph those kind of sophisticated dance moves, you deserve your own music video. Enjoy!

Love is in the Air at Merrill Gardens

It’s a traditional love story straight from the 1950’s, being played out today in 2014.

Lillian and Ron - 2013 Senior PromOur stars tonight are Lillian and Ron, residents of Merrill Gardens in the lovely town of Santa Maria, California. Our young lovers may now need to live in different buildings in the community. But physical proximity cannot keep them apart.

Rain, shine, snow or fog, the two lovebirds have every Friday dedicated for a date with each other. If you sit in the lobby of the Garden House (our living area for residents who need supportive care) you’ll see Ron romantically picking up Lillian from her apartment. They’ll walk side by side to the dining room, so that she can play the piano for a dedicated audience of one. Some days Ron will share her talents with the rest of the community, and they’ll head to the Baby Grand Piano in the lobby. There, she’ll delight the room with musical ability only overshadowed by the smile on her face.

Lillian and Ron - Wedding PhotoAfter that, the couple will often do what they’ve been doing for decades – celebrating with each other at Happy Hour and toasting the day. Their affection is contagious, and brightens up the room.

The love and loyalty Ron and Lillian share are inspirational to residents and team members alike. We salute Lillian and Ron for making Merrill Gardens a special place to live.
