Over the past few months at Merrill Gardens, our residents have been up to some fun things! Here are a few shots we’d love to share with you.
We’ve Been Cooking!
We are so proud of the great work our chefs do in our communities each day and we wanted a way to showcase their amazing recipes with our Top Chef competition. During our competition we picked the ‘best of the best’ in four categories. The winning recipes will soon be featured in all Merrill Gardens communities.
We’ve Been Dancing!
Dance makes exercise fun! Research shows that physical activity can be the key to health aging. These residents at The University community are getting lots of exercise while they move to the music in this Active Living dance class. Here are some residents having a blast!
We Had Our Annual Ace Awards!
We are proud of our team members and each quarter we honor those who provide the best customer service for each region. These are our customer service leaders, many of whom were nominated for this award by our residents. Nice job! Congrats to our ACE Award winners!
We’ve Been Traveling!
Twenty three residents from six Northern California communities spent the day at beautiful Yosemite recently. The famous park was the destination for our Active Living regional trip and what a spectacular spot! Great sightseeing and wonderful meals made for an exceptional day. The residents were from our communities at Vallejo, Northbay, Rohnert Park, Fremont, Willow Glen and Manteca.
We’ve Been Celebrating!
For holidays, Merrill does it’s best to provide the party! From dinners to parties, Merrill loves to have fun with our residents. Most recently, we celebrated mothers day with dinner and drinks!
The residents at Merrill Gardens have had some fun nights in the past few months! St. Patrick’s Day, Travel to Scotland, and A Night in Paris. At Merrill Gardens, our residents can get a taste of culture without even leaving home!

Over the past century, the lifespan of an average person has increased drastically. In today’s world, seniors are living longer than ever before. In years past, the peak of age averaged at anywhere from 60-70. Today, seniors have greatly outlived and surpassed these numbers – some living to be over 110!
With medical advances in recent years, many diseases that once were fatal now can be easily cured accounting for this increase in lifespan. In a recent article on Redding.com, Dr. Arlen Burger states that ” Healthy living can extend your life span and help you to enjoy your longer time on Earth.” Enjoying a healthy lifestyle includes activities such as partaking in moderate amounts of exercise, eating a well balanced diet, and having a positive outlook on life.
Dr. Arlen also noted that “Overcoming years of unhealthy habits is extremely difficult to overcome. Starting an exercise program feels impossible when it hurts to move because joints are bearing the burden of extra weight. Smokers find it hard to participate in aerobic activities because they can’t catch their breath. The barriers to practicing a healthy lifestyle are tremendous for those who are overweight, smoke or are hung over from a night of drinking.”
Practicing a healthy lifestyle may be challenging at times – the support of a friend or loved ones can often help keep you on the right track. Setting goals to achieve the healthy lifestyle you wish to lead can also be helpful in reaching your goals. With a healthy lifestyle comes a more enjoyable journey into the latter ages.
In future years, many have predicted that the lifespan of a human will only continually increase. What do you plan to do with your extra years?
Our residents have such interesting stories to tell about their lives. As part of a continuing series, we have asked our residents to share their lives in a series of video interviews. This wonderful couple lives at Merrill Gardens at The University in Seattle and we asked them to reflect on their 65 years together. Enjoy!
