Easter at Merrill Gardens With The Seattle Sounders

Merrill Gardens residents received a treat this Easter, as members of Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders paid a visit. David Estrada, Patrick Ianni, Roger Levesque and Taylor Graham visited the community to celebrate Easter with the residents as part of the United We Serve campaign.

A large part of the Merrill Gardens experience is active living. But residents admitted that hanging out with professional soccer players exceeded the normal pace of a weekend in the community.

Players taught residents the finer points of the game, even to super beginners.

“The two ladies I was working with, had never touched a soccer ball before,” said Roger Levesque. “But they were scoring goals.  I mean, it was kind of impressive.”

In addition to the training, all of the players decorated cookies, played soccer, and chatted with the residents.

“We love being involved in the community, so it was so exciting to have the Sounders come,”added Shawna Dazey, Merrill Gardens Active Living Director.

This was a great time for all of our residents. To keep up with the activities going on at Merrill you can follow us on Facebook.

Merrill Gardens at Mill Creek – Relay For Life

Merrill Gardens at Mill Creek is making a difference by teaming up to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

At the event, our team will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time. Our team is doing our part to make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.

Please join our team or make a donation. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone!

Grandparents Gone Wired

Mashable posted an article yesterday called, “Your Grandparents Are Getting Wired for the Holidays

The article showcases DoSomething.org, which is planning to give less tech-savvy elders some help by asking kids to get their grandparents wired up. DoSomething’s “Grandparents Gone Wired” is a technology campaign encouraging kids to teach seniors how to use technology and social media.

If you’ve been following the Merrill Gardens social media channels, you know this theme is one that is close to our hearts. Not a day goes by without our residents logging into their Facebook pages or Skype accounts to chat with their relatives. That is, when they’re not competing in a Wii Bowling Tournament.

Of course, kids aren’t the only ones who can teach others how to use these new electronic toys and gizmos. Our communities are filled with folks willing to pass along a little technical know how (such as Geekwire.com’s “Geek of the Week,” Bill Sleeper.)

But we embrace the idea of “Grandparents Gone Wired.” Though, since it’s the holidays, we expect the kids to teach Grandma and Grandpa how to buy preents on Amazon.com as well…

What We’ve Been Up To At Merrill

Over the past few months at Merrill Gardens, our residents have been up to some fun things! Here are a few shots we’d love to share with you.

We’ve Been Cooking!

We are so proud of the great work our chefs do in our communities each day and we wanted a way to showcase their amazing recipes with our Top Chef competition. During our competition we picked the ‘best of the best’ in four categories. The winning recipes will soon be featured in all Merrill Gardens communities.

We’ve Been Dancing!

Dance makes exercise fun! Research shows that physical activity can be the key to health aging. These residents at The University community are getting lots of exercise while they move to the music in this Active Living dance class.  Here are some residents having a blast!

We Had Our Annual Ace Awards!
We are proud of our team members and each quarter we honor those who provide the best customer service for each region. These are our customer service leaders, many of whom were nominated for this award by our residents. Nice job! Congrats to our ACE Award winners!

We’ve Been Traveling!

Twenty three residents from six Northern California communities spent the day at beautiful Yosemite recently. The famous park was the destination for our Active Living regional trip and what a spectacular spot! Great sightseeing and wonderful meals made for an exceptional day. The residents were from our communities at Vallejo, Northbay, Rohnert Park, Fremont, Willow Glen and Manteca.
We’ve Been Celebrating!

For holidays, Merrill does it’s best to provide the party! From dinners to parties, Merrill loves to have fun with our residents. Most recently, we celebrated mothers day with dinner and drinks!

Friend us on Facebook to stay updated and see what’s happening at Merrill.

Here’s a little video for you of a sweetheart social and a high tea with the Red Hat Society. These are just two of the ways our residents celebrate fun at Merrill Gardens at West Seattle! Also, see Elvis pay a visit to Merrill Gardens. There was a whole lotta shakin’ going on when Elvis performed for the residents at Courtyard Park!

At Home With Merrill Gardens

Congratulations to Merrill Gardens at The University (Seattle, WA)! The community is a finalist in the DESIGN/Environments for Aging Awards. A 16 member jury made up of architects, interior designers, regulators, providers, and researchers, all with backgrounds in senior care and long-term living, chose just five communities from across the country for this award.

There is an award ceremony set for March 22 in Atlanta where we will find out if we are the Best in Show winner. The community will also be featured in DESIGN Magazine.

This inter-generational community offers both senior housing and market rate apartments across a shared courtyard along with great shops and restaurants. We are thrilled that the community has received a number of awards for its design and unique approach to senior living. Kudos!
