Four Fun Fall Crafts

With all of the natural beauty falling at our feet, fall is a great time of year to learn some new crafts. Doing crafts is a great way to socialize (or spend some quiet time alone), exercise your creativity and dexterity, and can be a fun hobby. Here are four fun fall crafts you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Fall Wreath

No autumn craft lineup would be complete without a garland of fall foliage. These wreaths bring warmth and comfort to your home. The best part, most of the materials you need are just outside your front door or easily accessible at your local craft shop: leaves, pinecones, branches, nutshells, moss, etc. You’re limited only by your imagination! Some people will even use common household items like coffee filters to create wreaths.

Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a timeless craft idea that isn’t specific to autumn time. Scrapbooks make a special, meaningful gift for family and friends, or provide an elegant souvenir for personal posterity. It’s a fun way to reminisce about good times and relive them. And if you make a scrapbook with someone you care about, it inevitably draws out memorable stories for you to share together.

Knit Blanket

Who doesn’t like cozying up under a nice knit blanket? It’s great for so many occasions. Whether it’s watching your favorite TV show, streaming a movie, or to keep warm while enjoying some fresh air, a knit blanket has many uses. If you’re looking for a craft that pushes you a bit, this gingham knit blanket project is fun and challenging, while not being too difficult.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to get into knitting, or maybe you enjoy creating useful things with your hands. Since this blanket is made out of strips of scarves, it’s not too difficult and you can customize how it looks to fit your style. It also doesn’t require too many materials and can be done at your own leisure. Put on some of your favorite music, and it’s a lovely way to spend some “me” time.

Terrarium

Gardening is a soothing and nurturing pastime, but it can be a lot of work. So why not bring the garden indoors and make it a more manageable size? That’s exactly what you can do with a terrarium, similar to a miniature greenhouse. You can use a variety of containers that are different sizes, from fish tanks to cookie jars. These can be a bit more labor intensive, but they can be incredibly soul-soothing and fun. They also require a little bit of ongoing care, so it can be a bit like having a very low-maintenance pet.

As you can see from the link above, it’s also a great way to spend time with friends or family. Terrariums are a great way for us to feel reconnected with the earth in a low impact manner. They can help replenish the air around us, and even aid in getting a good night’s sleep.

Whatever your interests, there’s a craft out there for you to learn and enjoy (if you’re looking for more ideas, you can find some here). Crafts are particularly good for aging adults as they exercise our brains and creativity, as well as our focus and learning. They’re a great way to exercise our dexterity in a practical and fun way. When you create something, an inevitable sense of accomplishment follows, even more so if you’re making it as a gift for a loved one. It enhances mood and makes you feel good. And if you do them with friends, well, that just becomes a craft party!
