Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient for bone health, it works with calcium to build bones and keep them healthy. Vitamin D also supports immune health and helps keep both muscles and brain cells working. Sun exposure is a primary source of vitamin D and even though it is super beneficial, it's important to use sun protection and approach being outside with safety. Too much sun exposure, or bad sun exposure, can lead to things like skin cancer, sunburns, or eye damage. With the hottest months of the year coming up, knowing how to minimize the negative effects of the sun is important. Read below for tips on sun safety!

Clothing

Wear protective clothing that covers the skin and loose fitted clothing to minimize skin exposure, avoid dark colors that absorb the sun's rays. The use of wide-brimmed hates and sunglasses can help protect your head, face, and eyes from the sun's rays.

Sunscreen

Generously apply sunscreen of at least 30 SPF to exposed skin about 15 minutes before going outside. Ensure sunscreen is reapplied every two hours even if it is cloudy and especially after activities that involve water or sweat.

Shade

Stay in shady areas when the UV is strong. Luckily, we have technologysuch as the weather app, or this helpful website, where we are able to check the UV for the day, generally it reaches it's peak between 10am - 4pm.

Stay Hydrated

Carry a water bottle with you regularly, don't wait until you are thirsty to drink water, eat hydrating foods, and infuse water with mint, lemon, or lime to add flavor! It is important to make sure you are drinking an adequate amount of water every day to avoid dehydration and prevent heat illness.
